About this title
Elephants Dream (originally titled "Machina") is the world's first open movie, produced by the Blender Foundation using entirely open-source tools. Released in 2006, it pioneered the concept of open content filmmaking.
The film follows two characters — the enthusiastic guide Proog and his skeptical companion Emo — through a vast, surreal mechanical structure. Proog sees a wondrous and dangerous world, while Emo sees nothing but empty rooms and meaningless machines. Their conflicting perceptions lead to a philosophical confrontation about reality, imagination, and the stories we tell ourselves.
The project demonstrated that professional-quality 3D animation could be produced entirely with free and open-source software.
